About the Publishing Process
What genres do you accept for publication?
We consider all manuscripts in all genres, fiction or non-fiction.
Do you accept unsolicited manuscripts?
Yes, we encourage you to submit your manuscript.
How do I submit my manuscript for consideration?
Visit our Publish page to make a submission, or our Contact page if you have any questions about the process that are not answered here.
What happens after I submit my manuscript?
Upon receipt, your manuscript will be reviewed according to the context guidelines you include with your submission. If your manuscript is accepted, you will be notified and given a timeline for a more in-depth review period which will involve proofreading, editing, cover design, typesetting, and release.
How long does the publishing process take from submission to release?
Although timelines may vary greatly depending on the unique quality of each manuscript, our goal for a finished manuscript is 3 to 6 months from submission to release.
Contracts and Rights
Do I retain the rights to my book?
Yes, you will retain the copyright to your work.
Will I be required to sign an exclusive publishing contract?
Most manuscripts accepted for publication will be offered a publishing contract which grants Bridian House exclusive rights for five (5) years and reverts to a grant of non-exclusive rights in perpetuity thereafter.
What royalties or earnings can I expect?
For a standard five-year contract, the royalty schedule begins at 50% for the first year and gradually increases to 90% by the end of the fifth year. Your royalty rate will remain at 90% thereafter for any copies sold.
Can I publish my book elsewhere after publishing with you?
During the exclusive term, you may not publish elsewhere. Once your contract reverts to non-exclusive rights, however, you are welcome to seek publication at will.
Will I have input on decisions like cover design and pricing?
Yes, you will have full creative control over the final design and pricing of your work.
Costs and Services
Do you charge authors to publish their books?
No, Bridian House is not a vanity press or pay-to-publish mill. We will work closely with you to develop and finely tune your work, which may include services for a fee. However, you are not required to use our services in polishing your manuscript prior to release.
What services do you offer (editing, design, marketing, etc.)?
We are a full-service publishing house, with offerings at every stage in the lifecycle of your work – from “I have an idea” to “It’s ready to print” and beyond.
Are there tiered service packages or à la carte options?
Yes, please visit our Services page for a complete list.
Do you offer payment plans or financing for your services?
We recognize that individual circumstances are unique, but that shouldn’t be a barrier to realizing your vision. If you need flexible payment options for professional services, please reach out to us through our Contact page.
Additionally, authors who have already published with Bridian House may elect to use professional services and defer payment against future royalties for a new manuscript in progress!
What’s the difference between traditional publishing and hybrid/self-publishing with you?
Traditional publishers are primarily in the business of making profitable wagers on new or established authors, and self-publishing outlets such as vanity printers exist only to give you a printed copy of your work for a fee. We, however, are in the business of art for the sake of art – you have a vision, we have professional expertise, and we want to be your trusted partner in bringing your work to market. If you don’t profit, we don’t profit.
Editing and Design
Will my book be professionally edited?
Yes, prior to release your manuscript will be reviewed and approved in-house by a professional editor.
Can I use my own editor or cover designer?
You can use your own editor, cover designer, or other service providers as needed, or you may use our professional Services as part of your author journey.
How involved will I be in the editing and design process?
We value your work and your vision, and you will have full creative control during the editing and design process.
Do you format books for both print and eBook versions?
Yes, your manuscript will be formatted for both print and e-print.
Do you offer illustrations or custom art?
If your manuscript will require illustration or artwork, please let us know via Contact or Publish. We do not currently offer in-house illustration or custom art, but we will coordinate with you to arrange these services on your behalf.
Marketing and Promotion
What kind of promotional support do you provide?
Although we do not currently offer in-house marketing support, we will work with you prior to and after release to advise on marketing and promoting your work.
Do you help with author branding or building a platform?
Yes, we will help you with branding and platform building as a new or established author.
Do I have to handle any marketing myself?
Unfortunately, we do not currently offer in-house marketing, but this is an area into which we will be expanding as able. We do offer coaching and advisory assistance with marketing.
Can you help me set up book signings or speaking events?
Yes, we will assist you with coordinating promotional events when your book is released.
Distribution and Sales
Where will my book be sold?
Your book will be available through global distribution, online and in stores, in print and electronic format.
Will my book be available in bookstores?
Yes, your book will be available in bookstores. However, please note that this may depend on the stocking decisions of the individual stores and we cannot guarantee placement in any specific outlet.
Do you help with getting reviews or media coverage?
We do not facilitate book reviews, largely to avoid any appearance of “fluff” marketing. We will coordinate with you as your book approaches its release date, however, and Bridian House will issue press releases to solicit media coverage of your work.
Can readers buy my book directly from your website?
Currently, we do not offer direct sales through our website. However, this is something that we plan to offer.
Do I receive author copies? Can I order books at a discount?
Yes, you will receive a limited number of author copies upon release, and you can order additional copies at cost.
Post-Publication
Will I receive sales reports and royalty statements?
Yes, you will receive sales reports and royalty statements on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis depending on your preference.
What ongoing support do you offer after publication?
Our goal is to be more than just your publisher, and we will continue to support you through your author journey with us. If you have questions or need support, advice, or coaching, you will always be able to reach out to us directly.
Can I update or revise my book later on?
Yes, if you ever decide to implement updates or revisions we will work with you to expedite the release of a new edition of your work on an accelerated schedule.
Do you offer services for audiobooks or translations?
We do not currently offer in-house services for audiobooks or translations, but this is something we plan to offer in the future. However, we will work with you to arrange these services as needed.
What happens if my book doesn’t sell well?
Unfortunately, this is a possibility that every author must consider. We hope that your work will be received well and widely, but we cannot guarantee it.
As a Bridian House author, however, you will never be treated with anything less than the full esteem and respect of a publisher that is truly humbled to be at your service. We will continue to work with you over time to increase sales as able. Please note, also, that our royalty structure is specifically designed such that the author reaps the greatest benefit from any sales, so our only financial incentive is to ensure that your work performs well in the market.
General
Why should I choose your publishing house over others?
Submitting your work to another publisher may well get you a 2% royalty on a title to be released 3 years later, if it’s released at all, or a bill for thousands of dollars and a box of hastily printed rough drafts with a thank-you note attached.
We value your vision and we only succeed if you succeed. You will have a dedicated representative who responds in minutes to hours, not weeks, and your publishing timeline will be in months, not years. You will never have to pay publishing fees or “administrative costs” for your work to be released, and your royalty rate will start at 50% upon publication.
At Bridian House, you will never be a line item on an earnings report. You will be an Author.
Can I speak to someone before deciding to publish with you?
Of course! We encourage you to use the Contact page to reach out to us with any questions you may have.
Do you publish debut or first-time authors?
Yes, and we offer additional coaching and support for first-time authors in navigating your author journey before, during, and after publication.
What genres are you most interested in right now?
We are currently accepting all genres.
Can I publish more than one book with you?
Yes, if you have more than one manuscript, we encourage you to submit them separately for consideration. We will coordinate with you on how you would like to approach publication depending on whether they are connected works, titles in a series, or volumes of a larger work.
